That ship should have been under pilot control and an assist tug or two tugs at least until it cleared the bridge.

I bet you from now on, if that bridge is replaced, harbour tugs and pilot will be mandatory from then on.

Re: Baltimore bridge collapse
I suspect that the ship is the "wrong age" to be fitted with any form of remote control and in any case would assume that the pilots would have insisted that it was disconnected whilst the ship was under their responsibility.

They seem to be considering contaminated fuel as a possible trigger/cause now.

Pwoper - thats an internet myth. The crew and captain were Indian nationals, but the ship should have been under control of harbour pilots, some of the most experienced and qualified mariners available.

The Ukrainian captain was for a 6 momth period prior to 2020.

There are some very concerned people in US suggesting that this ship was shut down remotely (remember the Suez shipping disaster?) at the right time and could even be Russian, Chinese, Iranian or domestic terror related.

But the US can determine the exact reason very quickly for a disaster when it suits; (Maryland Bridge - 1-2 hours - accident, Crocus concert - 1 hour ISIS K - NOT UKRAINE!, Nordstream 2 years and counting, JFK death 60 + years and still no release of the files)

Re: Baltimore bridge collapse
Isn't Baltimore a very important port for the US, both strategically and economically?

Have they ruled out ISIS-K as fast as they were blamed for the Crocus attack?

Can't they just rig up a Bosun's chair across the bay?

I seem to remember that they had one at the 1969 Dageneham Town Show.

Fast & fun - what is there not to like?

Re: Baltimore bridge collapse
Most Bridges in this country have massive concrete piers with piles to cushion any mishap with ships.
Even Tower Bridge has massive piers and that was built in the 1800s.
That bridge collapsing like that looks like a third world design

Re: Baltimore bridge collapse
There was a structural engineer on the news this morning saying most bridges have sacrificial structures built slightly in front and around the pillars to take the impact and protect the structure.
He seemed to think this bridge was weak and poorly designed.

Re: Baltimore bridge collapse
Well I don't know I'm not a structural engineer, just assumed in this day an age many bridges would have some sort of protection system.

zico that ship had a gross tonnage of 95,000 not sure any rubber bollard is going to help mitigate a collision by the kinetic energy provided by that ship, as slow as it was?

Re: Baltimore bridge collapse
Is there a reason why bridges don't have protective bumpers/boulders/whatever you call them around the legs to prevent situations such as this?
